A woman’s body undergoes massive changes when she’s pregnant. Your body will continually be trying to adapt and change until delivery. And one of the dreaded changes that can occur is the formation of skin tags.
Up to 50% of people will develop skin tags during their lifetime. According to skin tags gone, the reason won’t always be related to pregnancy, but hormonal changes are a significant factor.
The first step to getting rid of skin tags is learning what they are and why they occur in the first place. Let’s look at some of the reasons why these benign growths can appear.
What Are Skin Tags?
Small, flesh-colored growths that pop up during pregnancy are called skin tags. You’ll notice that they most often form on the skin’s surface when it has the following characteristics:
- There are many folds of skin
- The area is hot and moist
- It becomes rubbed and irritated
The areas that most often develop skin tags include the neck, torso, armpits, eyelids, the anus, and under the breasts.
This growth occurs on the outer layer of the skin. You’ll notice that the benign growth is likely to be relatively small and hangs over the area on the end of a thin stalk (it’s peduncular).
Hormonal changes in a woman’s body may contribute to the growth of skin tags. Just look at those dark spots that tend to pop up on a woman’s face when they’re pregnant. All of these changes to the skin are unwelcome, but are cosmetic conditions that need to be managed.
Skin tags aren’t a cause for medical concern, and the only thing you have to worry about is yourappearance. The skin tags often look like little small bumps on the skin. That’s all. But, they’re also noticeable, so a lot of people want to get rid of their skin tags.
Key Causes of Skin Tags
The most common causes for skin tag development include the following:
- Skin Rubbing. Areas of the body where skin rubs together are more susceptible to skin tag growth. Skin-related friction can be caused by a person being overweight or older, which contributes to these benign growths.
- Hormones. Fluctuating hormones are a major concern. Leptin is thought to be a contributing hormone. Estrogen may also play a role in skin tag growth.
- Weight Gain. Women will inevitably gain weight during pregnancy, which will cause skin to rub together and potentially lead to growths.
- Steroids. The use of steroids as a treatment before a woman is pregnant may also contribute to the condition. Again, it causes changes to the hormones.
- Aging. Older individuals tend to have a higher occurrence of skin tags. This is likely because they have additional folds of skin due to a reduction of elasticity.
Staying healthy and active during pregnancy can help prevent skin tags to some degree, but when they do appear, there are other ways to remove them, too.
Skin tags can be removed safely after the birth of your child. A few of the methods that may be recommended include the following:
- Surgical. Doctors can perform a quick surgical procedure that cuts the skin tags off. This is the fastest way to remove these unwanted tags, but scarring is likely.
- Cryotherapy. Another method that doctors recommend. Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin tags. The skin tag will eventually die and fall off, leaving you free of these unsightly growths.
- Cauterization. Lasers are often used to burn the tags off of the skin. A numbing agent is used so that the patient remains pain-free during the procedure.
- Ligation. Another prominent method used to remove skin tags is ligation. When this method is used, a fine string-like material effectively wraps around the skin tag, depriving the area of blood and causes it to fall off within a couple of weeks.
Ligation methods are sometimes offered over-the-counter to allow you to skip the doctor and perform your own removal at-home.
Skin tags rarely go away on their own, unless they somehow become twisted. An interesting fact is that pregnancy skin tags can sometimes be an exception to the rule. Once pregnancy-related hormones such as estrogen settle down, you may notice that your skin tags vanish.
